Theatre general management.
Kirk & Granite provides theatre general management for producers developing and staging plays and musicals. Based in London and New York, we bring the budget, contracts, finances and day-to-day administration together, from the first plans to the final settlement.
Tell us about your productionKeeping the whole production in view.
A production needs decisions that work creatively, practically and financially. We help you understand what a proposed run will cost, where the pressure points sit and what needs to be agreed before money is committed.
James Steel leads our London general management work. You work directly with us, with a scope agreed around your production, its scale and the support already in place.
We can join for development, a workshop or an industry presentation, or stay with a show through rehearsals, opening and the run. For projects moving between the UK and US, our London and New York partnership keeps the producing conversation connected.
What general management covers.
Budgets and production finance
Production and running budgets, cashflow planning, production accounts, payroll and royalties administration. We track the financial position as plans develop and support settlement and recoupment reporting.
Contracts and the people behind the show
Negotiating and administering agreements with venues, creatives and the company. The scope can include rights and licensing, union agreements, insurance, visas and production compliance.
Rehearsals, the run and closing
Coordinating production administration and company management, keeping the producer informed and dealing with the detail that continues after opening night. We agree who is responsible for each part at the start.
Experience across different scales.
Our founders’ general management experience includes Hit Machine at Soho Theatre, Fly More Than You Fall at Southwark Playhouse Elephant and the Smalltown Boy industry presentation at @sohoplace.
Development work includes Spells of the Sea and Breaking the Quill, originally Inside William. Each project needs a different mix of financial planning, contracts and practical support.
Starting with the right brief.
Tell us about the show, the proposed venue and dates, the budget you are working towards and the team already attached. If some of those pieces are still open, tell us that too.
We will work through the support required and agree the scope and fee. If you need help shaping the production before a general management brief is ready, our executive producing work can cover that earlier stage.
Questions producers ask.
Can you join before a venue or budget is confirmed?
Yes. A first budget and an assessment of the proposed scale can form part of the brief. We can help connect the creative ambition with the financial and practical plan.
Do you manage workshops and short runs?
Yes. We work on development, industry presentations and runs of different lengths. The scope is agreed for the project.
How are general management fees agreed?
Fees depend on the scope, preparation period, run and services required. Send us the outline so we can establish what support the production needs.
Tell us about the show.
Send us the outline, the stage you have reached and what you need help with. We can take it from there.
